By Air
Although some Scottish golf itineraries are focused exclusively on golf in the Highlands of Scotland, some now include flights into Inverness and then relatively inexpensive air travel to Belfast in Northern Ireland to extend a trip by playing many of the great courses there (e.g. Royal County Down and Royal Portrush) and then sometimes finishing with courses in the Republic of Ireland (e.g. Portmarnock, Old European, Ballybunion, Lahinch, and Waterville just to name a few). While this Highlands-Ireland itinerary may reflect a growing trend, it is still the case that the majority of Scottish golf tours emanate from Edinburgh or Glasgow. During season (April-November), there are daily non-stop departures from various US East Coast hub airports into Edinburgh (EDI) and Glasgow (GLA). If choosing to connect through Heathrow (LHR) or Gatwick (LGW), it is about a one-hour flight from either to EDI or GLA. From Edinburgh or Glasgow, it is a picturesque drive to Inverness and Castle Stuart. That drive north to the Highlands often includes golf in St Andrews, Carnoustie, and/or Cruden Bay along the way. Castle Stuart is located in the Scottish Highlands capital city of Inverness for which there is ample flight service from within the UK. Flight routes into Inverness from abroad are often best routed through London Gatwick, Amsterdam, or Manchester (although flights through Amsterdam and Manchester may involve a separate return ticket for the leg to Inverness).
