The sixth annual Castle Stuart Men’s Local Open has been won by Walter Geddes, from Inverness Golf Club, who narrowly missed out on the title two years ago.

Walter topped an 11-strong field at the weekend, finishing with a Stableford score of 35 points in the competition held over the Moray Firth links, which hosted the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open for the fourth time in six years in July.

He eased out Inverness clubmate Graham Fraser, who also finished on 35 points, but Walter took the prize with a better inward half.

The win means he has secured a place in next year’s Highland Golf Links Pro-Am, sponsored by Blue Group, which is part of the Tartan Tour.

Walter is one of only two players in the history of the Local Open to qualify for the final twice. In 2014, he tied for first place, but lost out on the title on that occasion as his opponent had a better inward half.

The Castle Stuart Men’s Local Open is the traditional end of season event at the links. It has grown steadily since being launched in 2011 and this year attracted 188 golfers living in the Highland postcode areas IV, KW and PH19 – PH41.

Qualifying events were held on Saturday 29 October and Sunday 30 October.

Jeremy Matte, Castle Stuart Golf Links’ Director of Golf, said: “Congratulations to Walter for a great win which makes up for his disappointment of 2014.

“The Men’s Local Open is a keenly-anticipated event in our calendar and is a great way to end our season.

“Capacity has increased every year and it is always a fiercely-fought event. This year was no different and Walter emerged as a worthy winner from a very strong field.”

This year’s other qualifiers were –

Neil Urquhart, Kevin Dick, Rikki Selkirk and Edward Morrison (all Inverness Golf Club); Michael Howitt (Nairn Dunbar); Michael Russell (Torvean); Innes Simpson (Nairn GC); Iain Cormack (Boat of Garten) and John Jack (Fortrose and Rosemarkie)
