Castle Stuart’s Deputy Head Greenkeeper Stuart Hawker has teed up a dream job this year when he will be part of the team looking after the Ryder Cup course. Stuart, 27, is one of the volunteer staff supporting the team at Le Golf National, near Paris, which will stage the Europe v USA showdown from September 25-30. The opportunity arose after Stuart spent a week on the course in 2016 midway through renovations, helping the club rebuild two tee boxes and re-shape the chipping green. A strong first day performance helped the Sassenachs’ team to victory and regain the Spire Trophy in the annual match at Caste Stuart Golf Links. The two-day event was played in glorious conditions and, despite an improved performance by the Castle Stuart team on Sunday, they went down by a score of 11 ½ to 8½. One of the biggest undertakings each year is gorse management and over the last three months a team of four staff has been working on cutting back the area of gorse on the course. Castle Stuart Golf Links is seeking entries from today (Tuesday, 6 March) for the Highland Ladies’ Open, which this year will have a new format and an extended capacity. The four-time Scottish Open venue is hosting the annual event for the fourth time on Sunday, 12 August.
