Gil Hanse, my friend and co-designer at Castle Stuart Golf Links, was selected to design the golf venue for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Asked what his primary objective was, he said Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse at Castle Stuart Golf Links course design should be about golfers and the course should be their stage for drama. Drama had been a constant topic of conversation throughout our years of working together designing and building Castle Stuart.

Those discussions shaped the nature of what we did and why. Augusta National and the Old Course in St Andrews often guided us in our search for the essence of drama that could engage virtually everyone, amateur and professional alike. Perspectives on our design ethos permeate the Castle Stuart website.

Our design ethos isn’t as radical as some have thought, but rather a rediscovery of what the origins of the game reflect coupled with what some of the greatest course designers of golf’s Golden Age (most notably Alister MacKenzie) wrote and mused over. For us this rediscovery has been both invigorating and inspiring.
