Stuart Answers Ryder Cup Call
Castle Stuart’s Deputy Head Greenkeeper Stuart Hawker has teed up a dream job this year when he will be part of the team looking after the Ryder Cup course.
Stuart, 27, is one of the volunteer staff supporting the team at Le Golf National, near Paris, which will stage the Europe v USA showdown from September 25-30.
The opportunity arose after Stuart spent a week on the course in 2016 midway through renovations, helping the club rebuild two tee boxes and re-shape the chipping green. He was invited back when volunteers were being sought for Ryder Cup week.
It’s another great experience for Stuart, who has been on the Castle Stuart staff since 2012 after gaining a degree in turfgrass science at Myerscough College in Lancashire, during which time he was also awarded an R&A scholarship.
He has worked at four Scottish Opens – three at Castle Stuart and one at Gullane – and two tour championships at East Lake Golf Club, near Atlanta, Georgia, where he spent a year as an 18-year-old.
He said: “The Ryder cup is the ultimate golfing event. It’s any greenkeeper’s dream to be involved, seeing how a large event is organised and managed and the standard of work that is carried out.”
