A strong first day performance helped the Sassenachs’ team to victory and regain the Spire Trophy in the annual match at Caste Stuart Golf Links.

The two-day event was played in glorious conditions and, despite an improved performance by the Castle Stuart team on Sunday, they went down by a score of 11 ½ to 8½.

Leading overnight by 6½ to 3½ after the Saturday four balls, the Sassenachs won back the trophy when Sunday’s competition ended with the teams scoring 5 points each.

Sally Watson, former LGA pro player and Castle Stuart ambassador, was among a host of well-known figures from the worlds of golf, business and the media taking part in the event.

Simon Creagh Chapman, former long standing greens’ chairman of Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, again captained the Sassenachs and had the honour of receiving the iconic trophy from Grant Sword, the Caste Stuart captain.

Simon instigated the competition and Castle Stuart Golf Links commissioned master silversmith Andy Macgowan to make the trophy. Simon later, by chance, discovered a wooden beam from Castle Stuart in an Edinburgh warehouse and this was made into a plinth for the trophy.

The concept of the ‘Spire’ is to invite like-minded people to get together over a weekend for a friendly but competitive tussle on the links and then enjoy some fine Highland hospitality, which this year included an excellent dinner at Rocpool in Inverness.

Among those taking part this year were Stuart McEwen, Secretary at Muirfield Golf Club; former PGA professional Gillian Stewart, now a coach at Castle Stuart; Frazer McGinn, from Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Western Australia; golf commentator and blogger Maureen Madill; Lesley Mackay, PGA Pro at UHI Dornoch; Andy Stewart, lecturer at UHI Dornoch and president of Brora Golf Club; Ian Ritchie, from Loganair; Alexander Stothard , from tour operator Ossian Adventures; and Derek McLachlan, from the Redcliffe Hotel and Albatross Transport.

This year’s contest once again lived up to the spirit of the event and feedback from the players about the outstanding condition of the course and the Highland hospitality was extremely positive and welcome.
