Drive To Improve Takes Me Across The Pond

This season, Sally Watson, a Ladies European Tour professional and Castle Stuart Golf Links ambassador, is giving us an insight into life on tour in a series of blogs.

In her second post, she reveals some details of her recent trip to America, as well as her favourites for the US Open this week.

The recent gap in the LET schedule meant I had a few weeks to my next tournament in Europe, so I used the time to visit the US. It was an ideal opportunity to both work on my game in Florida and also play a couple of Monday qualifiers for two LPGA events.

As always, I had a great time in the states. Although I didn't qualify for either tournament - it's pretty tough as there are only two places and normally around 50+ competitors - they were both great learning experiences and playing at LPGA calibre courses is always great fun.

I have been focusing the majority of my practice recently on trying to improve my ball flight with my long game and on my putting pace. I strike it best when I play with a little draw and my ball flight became much more neutral last year, leading to a slight loss in distance and less consistency with the strike.

Getting those few consecutive days working with my coach out in Florida, as well as getting a couple more competitive rounds under my belt, has been really helpful. Practicing can help you so much, but you only truly improve when you are getting regular opportunities to compete.

The next LET event is the Turkish Ladies Open on 19th June, and I’m confident my time in the US will help me hit the ground running for the re-start .

Another upside to the lack of LET events so far this year has been the increased time I have been able to spend with my family. We are all really close and so it has been nice to see everyone on a more consistent basis.

My parents are also moving house soon so I have been trying to do what I can to help them prepare for the move.

While I’m preparing for my own forthcoming events, I’ll be keeping an eye on the next Major of the season, the US Open which starts on Thursday.

My tip for the Masters was Justin Rose, who came so close before losing in a play-off to Sergio Garcia. I always love Justin Rose when it comes to the Majors, and so will be rooting for him again.

Dustin Johnson is another one with a great Major record as of late. I also read an article about Jason Day and the work he has been putting in to get his game back to where it was a couple of years ago, so I think both of them are also contenders.

I don't have any outside picks, but whoever wins has to be someone who can stay composed and calm under the pressure that a US Open course puts on players. Good luck to them all.
